// start the Kafka services
sudo systemctl start kafka schema-registry ksqldb

// individually
sudo systemctl start kafka
sleep 12
sudo systemctl start schema-registry
sleep 12
sudo systemctl start ksqldb

// see the service status
sudo systemctl status kafka schema-registry ksqldb

// check the Java logging stream for Kafka
sudo journalctl -u kafka.service -f

// check active services
sudo systemctl is-active kafka schema-registry ksqldb akhq
// NOTE: akhq has also been installed at this point

// check active network ports
sudo ss -tulpn | grep -E '9092|8081|8088|8080'
    9092: Broker
    8081: Schema Registry
    8088: ksqlDB Server Gateway
	
// review logs in realtime
sudo journalctl -u kafka.service -f
sudo journalctl -u ksqldb.service -f
These are useful commands for managing a Kafka installation on Linux/Ubuntu. Tested working with a fresh install of Kafka 8.3.2 Community Edition.
